Military Relocation To Lackland
AFB Lackland AFB is home to about 7,200 military personnel, civilians and family member and is often thought of more than a town than a military base. Lackland AFB, which was originally built in 1941 and named after Brigadier General Frank Lackland, is a military base that provides much of the basic training for Air Force recruits and is the place to go for basic military training for the National Guard, the Air Force Reserve and the active duty Air Force.
It is expected that, by 2011, most military personnel and employees of Lackland AFB will transfer to Fort Sam Houston as part of the U.S. Department of Defenseâs Base Realignment and Closure Program (BRAC).
