A checklist for great golf: Awesome scenery? Check. Convenient to get to? Check. World-class course? You better believe that’s a check. San Antonio and its neighbors have all these bullet points and more. If you’re looking for reasons to golf in the Alamo City, here are five compelling ones:
Tapatio Springs Golf Resort & Conference Center
Eighteen holes? Pah! Tapatio Springs offers 27 holes of championship golf just a few minutes northwest of San Antonio. Its three 9-hole courses offer exquisite Hill Country views, complete with blue lakes, limestone cliffs, and soaring trees. The terrain runs from simple to challenging and is a must for anyone looking for a unique day on the links.
Northern Hills Golf Club
Looking for a real challenge? Try golfing at Northern Hills and staying clear of the trees. This course’s old growth makes for a lot of “spirited” play because if you don’t keep the ball on the fairway, you better have a huge handicap. Members get dibs on tee times, especially on weekends, so try to visit midweek.
Flying L Guest Ranch Golf Course & Resort
Towering oak trees and rolling hills make this Hill Country course one to play. There are doglegs aplenty and a signature seventh hole surrounded by water on three sides, with a sweeping view of the mountains in the background. The back nine is less challenging than the front, but this course is a model of classic design you’ll want to play again.
La Cantera Resort
Home to two 18-hole, championship courses, La Cantera opened in 1995 in grand style, by hosting the Texas Open. Play here and you’ll understand why it was an instant hit ‒‒ plenty of natural water features, mighty oaks, and limestone outcroppings that make this course a challenge and a joy to play. It is considered one of the best public-access golf courses in the country.
