Life in the big city offers lots to do, but what happens when you just want to spend the day in the park with the family? Well, in San Antonio, the answer is easy ‒‒ take the kids to one of the River City’s great family-friendly parks, like these:
1 San Pedro Springs Park
San Pedro Springs Park, the oldest park in the State of Texas, is actually one of San Antonio’s best-kept secrets, which is good until everyone realizes what a jewel this park is. Sitting less than two miles north of downtown, the park is named for the springs that emanate from below a limestone bluff and has been a municipal swimming facility since 1922. And this isn’t some gamy city pool, this is a magnificent, crystal-clear playground ringed by cypress trees that stretches as far as the eye can see. Kids, of course, love it, and so will you, even if swimming isn’t your thing. The park features a great playground for younger kids and includes several please-touch animal sculptures. 2 MacArthur Park
McArthur Park may have the best playground in all San Antonio. For decades it’s had the best variety of things to play on, making the park a favorite of families for years. Sure, the old, generally unsafe kid faves from the 1970s and 80s are gone, but what’s there now is the best variety of playscapes in town. Unlike many parks, MacArthur Park has swings for toddlers and big kids swings, and stuff any kid would love to climb on. By the way, no glass containers are allowed in McArthur Park, so kids are less likely to get cut on broken glass.
3 Eisenhower Park
While Denison may have the ultimate claim on the Eisenhower name, San Antonio likes Ike enough to offer one of the coolest family-friendly parks in the state. Here you can take a leisurely stroll with the kids because there are no bikes allowed on the walking trails ‒‒ trails which, by the way, offer some awesome local vegetation. Also, this is a dog-friendly park that also has tons of stuff to climb on.
4 Phil Hardberger Park
Phil Hardberger Park, on San Antonio’s north side, is an actual oasis in the city ‒‒ a 311-acre island of green amid the urban landscape. It’s also the city’s newest city park, on the site of a former dairy farm, and the largest public park to open in San Antonio since the 19th century. Its attention to native trees and natural landscape are the perfect home for the Urban Ecology Center, The park includes an eight-acre enclosed dog park that includes a water trough and picnic tables for the whole family. This is a wonderful park for families, especially if you want to expose yours to nature.
