The Top 5 Most Sought-After Schools Districts in San Antonio

San Antonio is no stranger to great communities with great school districts. And since the right school district is a major factor in the decision to move, consider the following districts when making up your mind:

1 Northside ISD

Probably the most highly regarded school district in the entire city is the Northside ISD, which even bills itself as “The Destination District.” Northside is located in the northwest quadrant of San Antonio and is the state’s fourth-largest school district (there are about 575,000 people living in 208,000 households in NISD). The district serves some of the most affluent communities in San Antonio, including some of its most upscale gated communities, such as Avaria and Anaqua.

2 North East ISD

North East serves 144 square miles in the north central and northeast areas of Bexar County and is the second-largest school district serving the San Antonio, following Northside. The communities it serves include the cities of Castle Hills, Hill Country Village, Hollywood Park, and Windcrest, and provides top-notch schooling to more than 68,000. NEISD is particularly known for its elementary and middle school programs, which have received state and national recognition in the past.

3 Alamo Heights ISD

Generally considered one of the best and safest neighborhoods in the greater San Antonio area, Alamo Heights also offers one of the region’s most acclaimed school districts.  The district serves Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, most of Terrell Hills (another sought-after neighborhood), and a small portion of San Antonio City.  Alamo Heights ISD has been recognized by the Texas Education Agency, and has produced its share of celebrities, including singer Christopher Cross, author Rick Riordan, and actor Peter Weller (i.e., RoboCop).

4 Boerne ISD

The affluent city of Boerne lies in Kendall, Bexar, and Comal counties, where it’s vaunted ISD draws some of the best and brightest. The district serves Boerne and the communities of Fair Oaks Ranch and Scenic Oaks. Boerne ISD is routinely listed as Recognized or Exemplary by the TEA and Boerne Middle School South was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2008-09. Over 700 Advanced Placement Program exams were administered to Boerne High School students in the last year, at a school with less than 2,000 students.

5 Comal ISD

Based in New Braunfels, just outside San Antonio City, the affluent Comal ISD serves students in five central Texas counties ‒‒ Comal, Bexar, Hays, Kendall, and Guadalupe. In 2009, the school district was rated Recognized by the Texas Education Agency. The school’s teaching staff is typically highly thought-of. Perhaps its most famous former employee is Carter Casteel, a teacher for Comal ISD who became the District 73 state representative from 2003 to 2007 and remains a respected attorney in New Braunfels.
