You don’t need to be a beer disciple to enjoy a good craft brew. And, if you’re ‘meh’ about beer, that attitude probably stems from the fact that you’ve never had a really great one, crafted by loving hands. Never fear, San Antonio is on the rise as a genuine craft beer Mecca. So get yourself out to one of these world-class brew pubs and try a pint of something special.
Blue Star Brewing Co.
Blue Star is the oldest brew pub in the city, and with good reason. Ever on the prowl for new and delicious beers, Blue Star changes its offerings to fit the seasons and has elevated its menu to a status far above typical bar food. It also features King William, a beer brewed from and on the waters of the San Antonio River.
Freetail Brewing Co.
‘Freetail’ is one of the most frequently uttered words among San Antonio’s craft beer cognoscenti. It’s also on the lips of pizza lovers, who know Freetail as maybe the best bar pie in town. The beers range from basic to downright inventive, and the taps change with regularity, so there’s always a reason to head back in and try out some more suds.
The Friendly Spot
How can a place with a name like this be anything but awesome? This open-air, icehouse-style tavern anchors the Southtown arts and King William historic districts and offers almost 200 brews on tap and in bottles. Twenty-five of those taps are Texas brews too. And as for how friendly it is? You can even bring your dog.
Esquire Tavern
Like a little ambience while you quaff and nosh? Esquire Tavern is your place. It’s dark, chill, and classically, almost film-noirishly, swanky. Then again, it was built in the 1930s, so there’s got to be some measure of old-school art deco lounge here ‒‒ including the 100-foot bar top, the longest in Texas. As for the beer selection? Excellent. Go try one at the place Esquire Magazine named one of America’s best bars in 2013.
