Often fondly referred to as “Military City USA,” San Antonio has had a very close relationship with the U.S. military for years, dating back to the mid-1800s. All branches of the military are represented in Military City USA and much of San Antonio’s economic success can be attributed to the military presence.

Fort Sam Houston

Fort Sam Houston is home to more than 27,000 military and civilian personnel and their families and covers an area of more than 3,000 acres, just north of downtown San Antonio. Fort Sam Houston includes the Brooke Army Medical Center, where more than 25,000 people are trained annually in medical exercises.

Randolph AFB

Randolph AFB's primary focus is on Air Force pilot training, although this base also trains a large contingency of support personnel. Most pilots of the Air Force have, at one time or another, gone through training at Randolph AFB. San Antonio Military Cash Back Rebates

Lackland AFB

Lackland AFB is now the only training facility for new military recruits for the United States Air Force. As such, Lackland AFB has 6,000 recruits going through basic training at any given time as part of their admission to the Air Force. Lackland AFB is home to over 120 units and puts nearly $2 billion into the San Antonio economy each year.

Kelly AFB

Kelly AFB, which is a part of Lackland Air Force Base, functions partly now as an Air Force Base. It also provides support for both the military and the city of San Antonio. Kelly AFB also serves as a military aircraft repair base for cargo and refueling planes and works closely with Boeing to make this base an important part of the San Antonio economy.

Brooks City Base

Once known as Brooks AFB, Brooks City Base is a joint venture between the city of San Antonio and the U.S. Air Force. Brooks City Base is home to the 311th human systems wing and also serves as a medical training facility. Although Brooks City Base is much smaller than when it was Brooks AFB, it still trains over 5,000 aeromedical personnel every year.

Camp Bullis

Located in the rolling hills of the Texas Hill County, Camp Bullis is home to Army training grounds. This massive, military reservation is comprised of nearly 30,000 acres, where training exercises from all branches of the military are performed.
