Settled in the 1860s, the town’s first post office was established in 1872. By 1885 Atascosa had grown into a community of nearly 200. In the early 1900s, Atascosa had grown some, but not by much, the population at that time was about 300 and remained so into the latter part of the twentieth century. Atascosa is close enough to San Antonio’s big city life and economic opportunities, and far enough away to maintain its down-home laid-back atmosphere.
